A year to remember - 21/12/2008

This year has certainly given us a lot to remember, both in the world of news, celebrity and fashion.

As 2008 got off to a flying start, skinny jeans and cowboy or riding boots were still the order of the day, while Uggs also continued to stay on trend.

But before long, girls in the know were snapping up the newest footwear fashion on the block - the shoe-boot - and teaming the statement item with skinny jeans or pretty feminine dresses.

Wedges were big news again during the summer as heels seemed to grow ever higher, with famous faces such as Gwyneth Paltrow leading the penchant for staggeringly towering stilettos.

Meanwhile, the UK team put in a gold standard performance at the Olympics, Alexandra Burke stormed The X Factor, while George Sampson was the Britain's Got Talent winner, US rockers Kings of Leon took over the charts with their fourth album - all this while the country was plunged into a financial crisis.

And just as much has been going on in the world of celebrity, as Glamour magazine points out in its review of the year.

In January, the actor Heath Ledger was found dead after taking an accidental overdose of sleeping pills, news which was made all the more poignant when millions upon millions of fans headed to the cinemas to see his final performance in this summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight.

It is now believed that Ledger could be set to earn a nomination for best supporting actor at the 2009 Academy Awards for his role as the Joker.

In July Angelina Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt welcomed the newest arrivals to their rapidly growing brood - twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline.

And there was good news for Britney Spears as well as she reclaimed her musical mojo when her new album Circus debuted at number one in the charts in November.

Meanwhile, Madonna and Guy Ritchie announced their marriage was over and went their separate ways, while Paul McCartney and Heather Mills made the headlines during their divorce proceedings - where Heather ended up representing herself in court.

If all that wasn't enough, millions of girls got what they wanted as Sex and the City returned in movie form - offering up the style inspiration that had been missing from the screens since its TV departure four years previously.
